Welcome to Udupi, a gem nestled at 1636 N Scottsdale Rd, Tempe, AZ. Specializing in vegan Indian cuisine, Udupi offers a diverse menu that caters to both vegetarians and vegans, making it an essential stop for food enthusiasts seeking authentic Indian flavors. With its rich and aromatic offerings, Udupi promises an extraordinary culinary experience.
As you step inside, you’ll notice a spartan ambiance that reflects a genuine focus on food over decor. While some may find the minimalistic decor lacking, the passion for cooking and the tantalizing aromas wafting from the kitchen set the stage for an unforgettable meal. Udupi may not be about the frills, but it certainly excels in flavor.
One of the standout dishes that you must try is the Baingan Bharta. This delectable North Indian dish features roasted and mashed eggplant that beautifully mingles with spices and tomatoes. Each bite carries a smoky essence, perfectly balanced with the warmth of cumin and garam masala. If you are a fan of dosas, Udupi boasts an extensive dosa menu, offering delightful variations like the rava masala dosa, which is particularly praised for its unique fennel seed flavor.
Diving into the appetizers, the Samosa Chaat is a true crowd-pleaser. The combination of crispy puris filled with spiced potatoes, chickpeas, and tangy tamarind chutney is nothing short of intoxicating. Every mouthful is layered with texture and taste that transports you straight to the bustling streets of India. Pair it with a Mango Lassi—a perfect blend that complements the rich flavors found in the curries.
For dessert, don’t miss out on the Saffron Kheer. This indulgent saffron rice pudding is rich and creamy, often garnished with nuts to enhance its luxurious taste. It is a sublime way to conclude your meal.
As for the drinks, while the Masala Chai could use a little more spice, the overall beverage selection is refreshing. The cozy warmth of a mango lassi can be a delightful counterbalance to any spiciness you encounter in your meal.
In essence, Udupi thrives on the quality of its food and the warmth of its service. Even if the décor may not impress everyone, the authentic dishes speak volumes about the restaurant’s dedication to vegetarian and vegan cuisine. I wholeheartedly recommend Udupi to anyone craving rich, flavorful Indian food. It’s a culinary journey waiting to be discovered.

This place has been on my list of restaurants to try for several years. I love dosas and there aren't many places around to find them. Udupi has plenty of dosa options on its menu. We came on a night that was not busy at all. In fact, we were the only people in the restaurant! We ordered several dishes to try (including 3 dosas): samosa chaat, chana masala, and palak paneer. The dosas were the mysore masala dosa, the onion rava masala dosa, and the special cauliflower dosa. The dosa menu is extensive and there is no description about the contents, so our waitress walked us through and gave recommendations. All of the food was good, though it was the dosas that stood out as our favorite. In particular, I ended up liking the rava masala dosa the best, I think because it had fennel seeds in the dosa, which gave it an interesting flavor and texture. To drink, we ordered a mango lassi and a masala chai tea. The lassi was great, but the chai was disappointing. It tasted like black tea with milk and I couldn't taste any spices in it. The ambiance is pretty Spartan. There isn't a lot of decoration. But that's okay, I didn't mind that part.

Sublime. Don't be put off by the photo copy paper menu and bare bones dining room, the food is exquisite. I dined here twice since they reopened and enjoyed both their buffet and a dosa dinner date. Our dosas were perfectly made, the sauces full of flavor and not over salted. We used to love the Gobi Manchurian at the old Udupi, so when we saw it on the menu, we couldn't order it fast enough. Guess what, it's even BETTER than it used to be. The food has the appropriate amount of heat and flavors are well balanced and dazzling. Servers and kitchen staff are extremely warm and friendly. You can tell they have a passion for cooking. Can't wait to go back!

Came here on a hot summer evening for dinner. My sister had never tried Indian cuisine before. I ordered my usual- samosas for appetizer, served with yummy tamarind sauce and mint chutney. For my entree, I had paneer tikka masala. Wow, the texture of that paneer was incredible compared to the chicken I would normally spring for- but this place is vegan/ vegetarian. I loved the sauce on the curry- just absolutely delicious and exactly how tikka masala should taste! We shared garlic naan, and of course had to dip in our curries. The naan was soft and perfectly garlicky. The rice served along with the tikka masala was exactly what I expected- yummy! The mango lassi was perfect to drink with the meal because it neutralizes the spicy palette- I am a bit of a baby when it comes to spicy. Definitely enjoyed it though! Overall a delicious dinner and would come again. My only critique would be the ambiance of the restaurant- the table was a bit wobbly and the menu was printed on a piece of paper. Not super important but just something to consider.
